Regional Economics

The program of regional economics in Peking University dates back to 1952 when the university established teaching and research office of economic geography. The program takes the lead in conducting research of spatial complex system and new economic geography. In terms of research methods, it emphasizes combination of economics, geography, and management, that of spatial configuration and process analysis, of micro and macro analysis, and application of high tech like computer, remote sensing and geographical information system. It pays great attention to develop theories and methods of regional economics while solving serious problems confronted by the nation.

Regional Science Association of China, as first-grade national association, and China Center for Urban and Regional Development Research both are affiliated to this program. Core members of the Capital Development Institute of Peking University are from the program. The sub-fields of the program include urban and regional economics, regional analysis and urban simulation, and urban and regional planning. Urban and regional economics mainly focuses on theories, methods, and application of regional economics, including theories and methods of regional macro economics, of regional micro economics, and of regional government economics. Regional analysis and urban simulation emphasizes integration of regional economics and GIS, system engineering, and artificial intelligence, exploring various quantitative methods and computer simulation technology. Urban and regional planning mainly studies theories, methods and application of urban and regional planning, including urban and regional management, urban and regional planning, economic development planning and management, tourism planning, utilization of urban land, and real estate development and management.
