The program of political theory in Peking University has a distinguished tradition. Metropolitan University of Qing Dynasty, the antecedent of Peking University, established courses of politics in 1902. Since the reform and opening up in 1978, the program of political theory of Peking University is the first one of its kind throughout the country. For decades of efforts, it has become a preponderant program in the School of Government, a national level discipline, and the only national base of politics of the Education Ministry in Peking University, upon which postdoctoral centers of Peking University relies.

For years, the program has trained large groups of people in research, teaching, and practice of political theory, produced the first PhD degree for the nation, and shaped the style and tradition of how politics is taught and researched. Currently it is the pivotal discipline of the school and also one of the theoretical bases for other disciplines.

The program consists of four sub-fields of studies, including political theories and methods, government economics, Western political thoughts, and Chinese political thoughts.


Chinese and Foreign Political Systems

 

Peking University is among the first which provide teaching and courses in Chinese and foreign political systems and comparative politics. Now the program undertakes large numbers of national projects and projects entrusted by the Ministry of Education and local governments. With substantial achievements, the program leads the relevant fields of Chinese government and politics, and comparative politics in the country.

This program has two sub-fields of studies: Chinese government and politics, and comparative government and politics. The former focus on teaching and research in Chinese government and politics, specifically including: government theories, government organization, party and government relations, government operation, central and local relations, and government and politics in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao as well. The sub-field of comparative government and politics focuses on basic theories and methods of comparative politics, functions and power process of foreign governments, systems of parliaments and parties, civilian systems, issues of democracy and rule of law, judiciary issues, and election systems.


History of Chinese Communist Party

 

The program of history of Chinese communist party established in 1980, has recruited approximately 200 graduate students, developed a fully teaching and research system with widespread academic influence, and yields a large number of outstanding leaders and talents for the party and government agencies.

The program consists of two sub-fields of studies, including party politics, and Chinese Communist Party and Chinese politics. Party politics is positioned as a central issue in political science research around the world. The main topics of this sub-field are: political parties, Chinese party politics, anti-corruption studies, and theories and directions of political theories. The field of Chinese Communist Party and Chinese politics surveys China??s modern politics, China??s contemporary politics, history of CCP during the socialist era of democratic revolution, and theory of Maoist political development.
